This Halloween, my best friend and I wanted to do something impactful to address marine pollution, a real life, scary problem that impacts humans, wildlife, ecosystems, and oceans all around the world. So we hit the beaches to remove non-organic marine debris that was either abandoned at the beach or washed up from the ocean. We found all different sizes of plastics, styrofoam, foam, rubber, foil, metal, and glass. From headphones and beach toys, to deodorant sticks and tarps, there were a variety of different items we collected. Then, we upcycled these items into a work of art! Everything was cleaned and sorted by colour before sewing and attaching everything together. Each item of debris was used to build and create this statement piece, with tarps, ropes, caution tape, and Christmas lights as the major elements. Smaller items and microplastics were then attached to the top and bottom for decoration. The upcycled garment represents the ongoing global issue of marine pollution by not only directly addressing this problem, but demonstrating how we can all be a part of the solution. We hope this piece inspires you to consider joining the cause however you can - such as joining community beach cleanups, picking up non-organic materials when you see them in nature, reducing your plastic use, and making more sustainable choices. You could even upcycle or repurpose items that you’ve found into a piece of art!
