I'll use mine until it barely works, and then I'll upgrade to the latest and greatest for that period.

I only upgrade my smartphone when it's broken. I've used some phones 3-4 years before changing it.

That's what I've always done. I usually keep a phone for 3 or 4 years myself. I try to take care of them.
