The ability to add holidays, birthdays, custom days etc. to the calendar without creating an event post is pretty swell! I just now noticed but seems they added it in 6.0.6.

Do I have to enable the calendar to get it to work?

Once you've added your custom days in admin CP, edit the calendar module from the calendar page to show holidays and/or birthdays.
