In short, it’s when you put something off multiple times until you’re at or even over your deadline to finish whatever that something is.
A lot of people do it. I’ve done it. I’m sure you’ve done it. Professionals do it all the time. Amateurs do it all the time. We all procrastinate at some point in our lives.
But the question is – why do we procrastinate, and how can we overcome it?
The why may be psychological.
Usually, self-doubt and stress are the main ingredients of procrastination.
It’s not good enough. I’m not good enough. They won’t like it. I have to make it better. This isn’t going to work.
The above are all great examples of statements we make as we procrastinate.
We keep putting it off because we don’t think it’s good enough to be finished. And then we hit our deadline or go over it. Usually, at that point, we go from procrastination stress to panic and rush something out the door.
Rushing is when you make real mistakes.
We are the worst at judging ourselves. We’re our own bullies. We’re too perfect, or rather, we think we’re too performing.
In reality, we’re nowhere near perfection, and as long as we have our own free will, we’ll never be perfect, and that’s fine.
Procrastination is a product of our own stress and self-doubt. You can’t deny that.
How to overcome procrastination.
Overcoming procrastination takes effort on your part.
You have to take the proper steps to do it, or you’ll never overcome it.
- You have to rid yourself of anything that distracts you. If you can’t get rid of it all, at least get rid of anything you can get rid of. Reduce distractions.
- You need to make less decisions. If you’re making a lot of decisions for things each day, you’re overwhelmed with decision-making. Reduce that, and it gets better.
- Focus on finishing your day as quickly as possible. Get things done now. Try to end your daily tasks with a lot of time left to do something else. Reduce your daily workload.
- Set routines and make them a habit. Planning and organization are the perfect strategies for overcoming procrastination.
- Find a mentor. Maybe it’s your significant other. Maybe it’s your parents. Maybe it’s your kids. Maybe it's your favorite author or blogger. Find someone who is a mentor that motivates you to get it done. Don’t go at it alone.
Procrastination is not permanent. It can be overcome. However, it requires being willing to take extra steps to get to a point where you can just do it and not wait for a better time.
You have to quit thinking you’re perfect. You’re not, and you’ll never be perfect. I’ve been alive for 40 years, and I’ve not met a single perfect person.
If you ever meet one, congratulations, you’ve met a space alien from outer space because there is no way that it can be a human.
